Seoul Itinerary Checklist (2026): 9 Things to Verify Before You Lock Your Plan
The payoff A plan that looks great on a map but fails on the day โ a plan that survives closed gates, transfers and a long flight.
๐ Trend signal: Recurring first-time planning problems: closed palaces, last-entry times, airport timing, payments and entry paperwork (checked against official operators on 2026-10-08)
Most Seoul itineraries do not fail because the places are bad. They fail because of small things nobody checked: a palace that is closed on the day you booked, a last-entry time that is an hour earlier than you assumed, or an arrival-day plan that ignores how long it takes to reach the hotel.
This checklist covers nine points worth verifying before you lock your plan. Where a fact is time-sensitive, it comes from an official operator and was checked on 8 October 2026. Hours and rules change, so re-check the official page before you travel.
1. Which palace is closed on which day?
The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center, which runs the palaces, publishes weekly closing days:
| Closed on | Sites |
|---|---|
| Monday | Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung, the Joseon royal tombs, Sungnyemun |
| Tuesday | Gyeongbokgung, Jongmyo, Chilgung |
The most common planning mistake is putting Gyeongbokgung on a Tuesday. If your trip is short, build the palace day around these closing days first and fit the rest around it. If a public holiday falls in the week, the closing day can move, so check the official page for that week.

2. What is the last-entry time, not the closing time?
Closing time is not the time you can walk in. For Gyeongbokgung, the official schedule is:
- NovโFeb: 09:00โ17:00, last entry 16:00
- MarโMay and SepโOct: 09:00โ18:00, last entry 17:00
- JunโAug: 09:00โ18:30, last entry 17:30
Changdeokgung is 09:00โ17:30 with last entry at 16:30 from November to January. In winter, a palace plan that starts at 15:30 is already tight. Deoksugung is the late-evening exception: it is open until 21:00 with last entry at 20:00.
3. How long does the airport really take?
The Seoul Metropolitan Government lists these times to Seoul Station:
- AREX Express (non-stop): 43 minutes from Terminal 1, 51 minutes from Terminal 2, fare โฉ13,000
- All-stop train: 59 minutes from Terminal 1, 66 minutes from Terminal 2, fare โฉ4,150โโฉ4,750
Those are train times only. Add immigration, baggage, the walk to the platform and the trip from Seoul Station to your hotel. For the full route options, see our airport to Seoul guide.
4. Is your arrival day too full?
If you land in the afternoon, a palace that day is unrealistic: after immigration, baggage and a transfer, you may reach the gate close to last entry. A better arrival day is a short walk near your hotel, a meal and an early night. If you arrive well before check-in, compare bag delivery and storage options so you are not carrying suitcases around.
5. Did you add transfer time between stops?
Map apps show travel time between two points, but they do not show the walk inside a large station, the wait for the next train or the time to find an exit. Add a buffer between stops, and use a map app that works well in Korea. Our Naver Map and KakaoMap guide explains the setup.
6. How will you pay, and what if your card fails?
Check your payment plan before the trip: which transit card you will use, whether you need cash for markets, and what to do if a foreign card is declined at a kiosk. Our travel cards comparison lays out the main options and their limits.
7. Do you need entry paperwork?
Depending on your passport, you may need a K-ETA, or you may be covered by a temporary exemption. Either way, check the current rules and the arrival card before you book flights. Start with our K-ETA guide.
8. What needs booking ahead?
Popular restaurants, pop-up stores and day tours can be hard to get at short notice. List the two or three things that matter most to your trip and book those first, then leave the rest flexible. For a day trip to the DMZ, read the operatorโs requirements before booking; see our DMZ tour guide.
9. Is the pace realistic for your group?
A common rule of thumb is two or three main stops a day plus meals. Go lower with children or older travelers, and leave one open half-day for rest or for the unexpected. If you want a full example of a balanced week, see our 7-day Seoul itinerary.
Quick self-check
Before you book, answer these:
- Is every palace or museum open on the day I planned it?
- Have I used last-entry times, not closing times?
- Is my arrival day light enough?
- Do I have buffer time between stops?
- Do I know how I will pay and how I will get around?
- Do I know my entry paperwork?
Frequently asked questions
Which palace should I visit if I only have one day?
Pick the palace that is open on your day. On a Monday, Gyeongbokgung is open; on a Tuesday, Changdeokgung and Deoksugung are open. Check the official page for holiday weeks.
Are palaces open at night?
Deoksugung is open until 21:00 with last entry at 20:00. Other palaces may run special night programs on selected dates; check the operatorโs page for the dates and how to book.
Can someone check my plan before I go?
Yes. If you would like a second pair of eyes from someone who lives in Seoul, you can send your itinerary for a written review.
