Neither of them is wrong — but the difference comes down to exactly two choices: how many places you’re visiting that day, and how much your morning is worth to you.

I priced this trip both ways on July 19, 2026 — the DIY route down to the last won using current fares and Nami Island’s official price page, and the tours live on Booking.com the same day. Most English guides still quote the ₩13,000 entrance fee “as of June 2020.” It’s ₩19,000 now. Let’s work with numbers from this decade.

The DIY route, priced in won (2026, verified)

The one fact that makes DIY viable: Nami Island’s ₩19,000 admission already includes the round-trip ferry (confirmed on the official price page today — Regular ₩19,000, students and 70+ ₩16,000, young kids ₩13,000, or ₩29,000 if you want to arrive by motorboat instead of ferry). You are not buying a boat ticket on top.

Route B — the cheapskate special (Gyeongchun subway line): the all-stops commuter train from Sangbong (or via Yongsan) reaches Gapyeong for roughly ₩2,400–2,500 each way — it just takes 80–95 minutes instead of 40. Walk from the station, and buy your admission discounted: resellers like Klook have listed the ferry-inclusive ticket around $8.75 (per iVisitKorea’s 2026 comparison — verify the current price before you buy), and a 2026 visitor on r/koreatravel reported a QR code next to the ticket booth itself that gives a discount on site. Total: ~₩17,000, about $12, for the same island everyone else is on.

Two booking notes from experience: ITX seats sell out on weekends — reserve on the Korail+ (코레일+) app (standing tickets exist if you’re late), and ITX is a separate ticket, so your T-money subway card fare doesn’t transfer.

What the tours actually cost (checked live, July 19, 2026)

One warning that applies to every Nami tour on every platform: admission fees are included on some listings and not others. Read the “what’s included” section before comparing prices — a $50 tour that excludes ₩46,000 of entry tickets is not a $50 tour. • Going to Nami Island alone? Take the ITX train from Cheongnyangni (₩5,700) and ferry (₩19,000) DIY — you’ll spend under $25 and beat the crowds.

That’s ~₩66,000, about $48 — essentially the same money as the $50.48 tour — except the city tour bus runs on roughly two-hour headways. Miss one connection and your itinerary collapses. For multi-stop days, the tour bus with a fixed schedule is genuinely the rational buy, not the lazy one.

The honest paragraph (what tour reviews won’t tell you)

Reddit’s r/koreatravel is split on Nami in a way glossy guides aren’t. u/dilberry, who took a tour: “They will direct you into a tourist trap restaurant that will only serve you if you pay for 2 people… Once you get on the island, it’s pretty much ‘be back here by 1 pm’.” (Another user, u/jksmam, pushed back that their similar tour had no forced stops — it varies by operator.) The harsher takes exist too — “nami is a waste of time imho… it’s just a big glamping ground” (u/Niko_47x) — against first-timers like u/Different_Dot_5762: “For first timers I think Nami island is def worth it.”

And this is DIY’s hidden weapon, beyond money: you own the clock. u/Holiday-Abrocoma2859 took the train with a friend: “We were there early like 9/10 am, not many people were there — the groups came when we left 2 hours later.” Tours physically cannot give you that; their buses are the 11 AM crowd. Go DIY, catch an early ferry (the first boat runs somewhere between 07:30 and 08:00 depending on season — confirm on site; the official price page even lists a cheaper ₩13,000 early-bird admission for pre-8 AM arrivals), and you’ll have the famous tree lanes nearly to yourself.

Wait — why is this island famous at all?

If you didn’t grow up in Asia in the 2000s: Nami Island (Namiseom) is a half-moon river islet that became a pilgrimage site after Winter Sonata (2002), the drama that ignited the first Korean Wave across Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. Its avenues of metasequoia and ginkgo trees are among the most photographed paths in Korea. The island styles itself as the “Naminara Republic,” a whimsical micro-nation — your ticket is literally called a “visa.” Besides the ferry, you can also zipwire onto the island from an 80-meter tower (price varies by package — confirm current rates on site). The pattern is lopsided: Korean interest peaks hard in late October–early November (index 100) when the metasequoia lane turns copper-gold — 2–3x the summer level (30–48) and 5x the winter floor (17–21). Right now, mid-July sits around 22.

Going in autumn? The math changes

Nami’s foliage peak runs roughly October 25 – November 1, a week or so behind Seoraksan up north. That gap is useful: if you’re in Korea for the back half of October you can catch Seoraksan at its peak around Oct 20–30 and still hit Nami on the way out, rather than choosing between them.

But autumn quietly inverts the DIY-vs-tour verdict above, and it’s worth knowing why before you book:

• ITX seats sell out. The train that makes the DIY route cheap is the same train every Korean day-tripper wants in late October. Reserve it days ahead or you’re standing, or worse, on a later departure that costs you the morning.
• The ferry queue becomes the bottleneck. On a peak-foliage Saturday the wait to cross can run long enough to erase the time DIY saved you. A tour doesn’t skip the ferry, but it does absorb the planning.
• Tour departures fill first. The combo tours that pair Nami with the Garden of Morning Calm are the ones that vanish earliest, because Morning Calm is arguably better than Nami in foliage season.

So: DIY still wins on a weekday, even in peak week — go for the first ferry and you’ll have the tree lanes to yourself for an hour. On an October weekend, the tour starts making sense, not because it’s faster but because you stop making decisions in a crowd.

One honest expectation-setter: Nami is a small island and the famous tree lanes are a handful of paths. In peak foliage week you are sharing them with a great many people. The photos you’ve seen were taken at 8 a.m.

If Nami doesn’t grab you — or you want to pair it with something better

Be honest with yourself: plenty of travelers find Nami pretty but slight — “a nice walk and some trees” — and half a day is plenty. If that’s you, here’s what’s on the exact same Gapyeong day-trip circuit, so you’re not building a whole day around one island:

• The Garden of Morning Calm (아침고요수목원) — a genuinely beautiful arboretum, and the single best add-on in autumn (foliage) or winter (the Lighting Festival). Adult entry ~₩11,000. Many people who shrug at Nami love this one.
• Alpaca World (알파카월드) — the family/kid favorite that Reddit brings up constantly; you walk a hillside trail feeding alpacas and deer. Pairs with Nami on combo tours.
• Gangchon Rail Bike (강촌 레일바이크) — pedal an old railway line along the river; more doing than strolling, which is exactly the complaint people have about Nami.
• Petite France & Italian Village — the “Little Prince” photo village. Fun for photos, but note the honest Reddit read: it’s small and can feel like a film-set gift shop. Good as a 60–90 minute stop, thin as a main event.

In spring/summer with no strong preference, Morning Calm still gives you more for the ₩11,000 than Petite France’s ₩16,000.
