K-ETA in 2027: What Happens After the December 31, 2026 Exemption?

๐Ÿ“ˆ Trend signal: Rising planning question for travelers booking trips for early 2027: will the temporary K-ETA exemption continue? (official notices checked 2026-10-10)

If you plan to visit South Korea in 2027, you may be wondering whether you will need a K-ETA, Koreaโ€™s online travel authorization. The honest answer today is: it depends on a decision that has not been announced yet.

This guide sticks to what the official sources say. I checked them on 10 October 2026, and notices can change, so please re-check the official portal before you buy a ticket.

The short answer

  • Koreaโ€™s temporary K-ETA exemption runs from 1 January to 31 December 2026 (Korea time).
  • Travelers from the covered countries do not need a K-ETA during that period. They file the free e-Arrival Card instead.
  • When I checked, I found no official announcement about 2027. The latest exemption notice on the K-ETA portal was still the one covering 2026.
  • If the exemption simply ends on its own terms, the normal K-ETA requirement applies to anyone who needs one from 1 January 2027. That is the default, not a new rule.

Which countries are covered?

The temporary exemption applies to 22 countries and regions: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Macao, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States (including Guam). The official K-ETA portal tells you whether your passport qualifies when you scan it during the application. For our own plain-English walkthrough, see our K-ETA guide.

What happened last year

The 2026 exemption was confirmed late. The K-ETA portal published its extension notice on 23 December 2025, and the Korea Tourism Organization posted its own notice on 26 December 2025. In other words, confirmation arrived only days before the previous exemption would have expired.

I cannot tell you the Ministry of Justice will follow the same timing this year. What last year shows is that a decision can come late, so you should not assume that silence in October means anything either way.

Two scenarios for 2027

1. The exemption is extended. Nothing changes for exempt travelers. You keep filing the free e-Arrival Card instead of applying for a K-ETA. See our arrival card guide.

2. The exemption ends. From 1 January 2027, travelers who normally need a K-ETA would have to get one approved before boarding.

What to do depending on your travel date

  • You arrive on or before 31 December 2026: you are covered by the current exemption if your passport is on the list. The exemption dates are in Korea time, so if you land close to midnight on 31 December or 1 January, check the official notice and ask your airline.
  • You arrive in January 2027 or later: you have two reasonable options. You can wait and watch the official notices, or you can apply for a K-ETA now as a safety net.

If you decide to apply early

  • The official fee is โ‚ฉ10,000 (about US$7โ€“8), and the portal says review is generally within 72 hours.
  • The portal states that exempt travelers may still apply, and that approved holders gain benefits such as skipping the arrival card.
  • The fee is not refundable. The official notice also says an approved K-ETA can be used until its expiration date.
  • Apply only on the official portal, k-eta.go.kr, so you pay the official fee shown there and not an agency markup.

I could not find an officially stated validity period in years on the application guide page I checked, so please read the validity on the portal before you decide.

How to catch the announcement early

Notices appear on the K-ETA portal and on Korean embassy sites. Last yearโ€™s Korean-language notices used wording like โ€œํ•œ์‹œ ๋ฉด์ œ โ€ฆ ์—ฐ์žฅ ์•Œ๋ฆผโ€ (temporary exemption extension notice). If you search the portal notice board or an embassy page for that wording, you will see the announcement as soon as it is posted.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a K-ETA right now if my country is exempt?

Not until 31 December 2026, if your passport is on the exempt list. You should still complete the free e-Arrival Card online before you arrive.

Can I apply for a K-ETA even if I am exempt?

Yes. The official notices say exempt travelers may still apply, but the application fee applies.

Will the exemption be extended into 2027?

It had not been announced when I checked on 10 October 2026. Check the K-ETA portal notice board before booking non-refundable travel for 2027.

Should I book 2027 flights now?

That is your decision. If the date matters, the safest plan is to book flexible fares, or to be ready to apply for a K-ETA before you fly.

If you want a second pair of eyes on a Korea itinerary, you can send it for a written review. You can also run through our 9-point itinerary checklist before you lock your plan.
